At the very end of your rear calipers resides the handbrake assy. At the very end lives this very thin, small circular wire like spring with a wee tip protruding out. It is fitted between the end nut adjuster and operating lever.  The wee tip is what causes the lever to work properly. If you have this portion apart you'll know about this spring. Don't see it?
