The sender in your fuel tank reads the level of petrol and transmits that information to the fuel gauge.  Simple enough.  If your tank is full and your gauge reads zero, maybe time to take a look at the ol' sender before assuming your gauge is faulty.  This sender is for the Mk2s and Mk3s.  Mk1s are totally different and we love 'em for that!
